Images, Icons and Symbols

Images, diagrams and symbols can be useful additions to documentation tools and templates. Users can add their own images to note or NoteWriter text. Builders can pre-load images that will appear when SmartText, SmartPhrase, SmartLink, SmartForm or letter templates are deployed by users to facilitate documentation tasks.

Images

Images can be included in any SmartText or SmartPhrase object, including SmartText produced from SmartForms. These are inserted using the "Insert Linked Image" icon in the associated text editor toolbar. Some images are used often (e.g., anatomic diagrams) and should not be reproduced when already available to copy from a shared source. Accordingly, development environments (POC, SBX) have a SmartText containing many common images. Any of these can be copied, then inserted in a new text object (SmartText, SmartPhrase) under development.

SmartText objects containing images can also be used with rules-based objects (e.g., CERMSG SmartLink, BPAs, etc.) that call SmartText objects. Again, it is best to avoid creating new SmartText images when equivalents may already exist. Check first by searching for SmartText (ETX) records using "YY AHS IMAGE" as a search keyword.

If a new image SmartText must be created, builders should heed the following standards:

Icons

Symbols

Symbols are simple (iconographic) images that can be added to text objects through font selections. Epic supports a few font sets offering symbols, including "Symbol", "WingDings" and "WebDings". These are convenient because the size of the symbol can be controlled the same way as text sizing and the inserted symbols can be positioned in line with other text.

Unfortunately, Epic symbol support is not complete. Looking up the three font sets online may suggest availability of icons that will not work in Hyperspace. Accordingly, development environments (POC, SBX) have a SmartText and a SmartPhrase that can be used to display all symbols available for use in Connect Care. These are mapped to standard QWERTY keyboard locations.
